چکیده

Carbonate minerals contain stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen with different masses whose abundances bond arrangement are governed by thermodynamics. The clumped isotopic value Δ i is a measure the temperature-dependent preference heavy C O to clump, or near each other, rather than light in carbonate phase. isotope thermometry uses values measured mass spectrometry (Δ 47 , 48 ) laser spectroscopy 638 reconstruct mineral growth temperature surface subsurface environments independent parent water composition. Two decades analytical theoretical development have produced mature proxy that can estimate formation temperatures from 0.5 1,100°C, up 1–2°C external precision (2 standard error mean). Influence of climate change and uplift on Colorado Plateau paleotemperatures from carbonate clumped isotope thermometry

[1] The elevation history of Earth’s surface is key to understanding the geodynamic processes responsible for the rise of plateaus. We investigate the timing of Colorado Plateau uplift by estimating depositional temperatures of Tertiary lake sediments that blanket the plateau interior and adjacent lowlands using carbonate clumped isotope paleothermometry (a measure of the temperature‐dependent ...

Carbonate clumped isotope thermometry of deep-sea corals and implications for vital effects

Here we calibrate the carbonate clumped isotope thermometer in modern deep-sea corals. We examined 11 specimens of three species of deep-sea corals and one species of a surface coral spanning a total range in growth temperature of 2–25 C. External standard errors for individual measurements ranged from 0.005& to 0.011& (average: 0.0074&) which corresponds to 1–2 C. External standard errors for ...

Temperatures of Aqueous Alteration on Cm Chondrite Parent Bodies Based on Carbonate ‘clumped-isotope’ Thermometry

Introduction: Aqueous alteration of primitive meteorites was among the earliest differentiation processes in the solar system [1], and a better understanding of it would help constrain and test models of the thermal and chemical evolution of planetesimals. One of the challenges is to establish the temperatures of alteration. Petrographic analysis of CM matrices [2] suggest their temperatures of...

Clumped isotope thermometry of carbonatites as an indicator of diagenetic alteration

We measure the clumped isotopic signature of carbonatites to assess the integrity of the clumped isotope paleothermometer over long timescales (10–10 years) and the susceptibility of the proxy to closed system re-equilibration of isotopes during burial diagenesis. We find pristine carbonatites that have primary oxygen isotope signatures, along with a Carrara marble standard, do not record clump...

Use of Clumped-isotope Thermometry to Constrain the Crystallization Temperature of Diagenetic Calcite

We describe an approach to estimating the crystallization temperatures of diagenetic calcites using clumped-isotope thermometry, a paleothermometer based on the C–O-bond enrichment in carbonates. Application of this thermometer to calcified gastropod shells and calcite cements in an early Eocene limestone from the Colorado Plateau reveals a record of calcite precipitation and replacement at tem...
